What 50 Years of LNG Service Has Taught Us

When KLINGER Westad supplied its first LNG valves in the 1960s, LNG was still a relatively young industry. Since then, vessel designs have evolved, trade routes have expanded and technologies have advanced. Through it all, one thing has remained constant: the need for reliable operation.

More than 50 years of experience in LNG applications have taught us many lessons. Some were learned through engineering and testing. Others were learned through decades of operation, maintenance and collaboration with shipowners, operators and shipyards around the world.

Reliability Is Built Long Before a Valve Is Installed

Reliability does not begin when a vessel leaves the shipyard. It begins during design.

Material selection, sealing systems, valve geometry and manufacturing tolerances all influence long-term performance. Small design decisions can have significant consequences over the lifetime of an asset.

In cryogenic applications, where temperatures can reach -196°C, there is little room for compromise.

Maintenance Should Be Considered During Design

One lesson we have learned repeatedly is that maintenance becomes easier when it is considered from the beginning.

Valves must not only perform during operation. They must also be accessible, serviceable and supported throughout their lifecycle.

The people maintaining the equipment are just as important as the people designing it.

Real-World Operation Is the Ultimate Test

Laboratory testing is essential, but operational experience remains the greatest teacher.

Every vessel, operator and application provides valuable feedback. Over time, this experience helps identify opportunities to refine designs, improve service procedures and strengthen reliability.

Many of the improvements incorporated into today’s solutions originate from lessons learned in the field.

Reliability Doesn’t End at Delivery

A valve’s lifecycle often extends over several decades.

Documentation, spare parts availability, technical support and service expertise all contribute to long-term operational confidence.

For many operators, knowing that support remains available years after installation is just as important as the valve itself.

Looking Ahead

The LNG industry continues to evolve, and the maritime sector is entering a new era shaped by alternative fuels and changing requirements.

While technologies may change, the principles of good engineering remain remarkably consistent.
